A sake cup made of duck eggs with maki-e lacquer.

The work was produced by Hyouboudo, a workshop of artisans who have trained in lacquer art in Kyoto.

The name "shuran" was chosen because "tamago" (egg) can also be read as "ran" in Japanese, and because being drunk and acting violently is called "shuran."

By combining beautiful natural objects with artisanal skill, we have created sake vessels with unique shapes and names.

Applying lacquer to natural objects like these and transforming them into tools is a popular idea for tea ceremony utensils. The tea ceremony has a culture of mitate, where objects with different uses or that would be discarded are transformed into tea utensils and used as tools for hospitality.

While admiring the beauty of its shape bestowed by nature and its new form as a tool, please enjoy it in moderation and without getting carried away...and enjoy it for many years to come.
