Red and white camellias are boldly rendered in blue underglaze and overglaze enamel, their strong forms standing out against a refined ground.
The interplay of color and line gives the composition both clarity and depth, expressing the quiet strength and elegance long associated with the camellia motif.

Through this utsushi, Ogata Kenzan’s distinctive floral language is respectfully reinterpreted, allowing a timeless design to resonate with a contemporary sensibility.

About Utsushi
Utsushi is a long-standing practice in Japanese ceramics in which artists respectfully learn from and reinterpret the works of great masters.
Rather than simple reproduction, it is a creative dialogue between past and present, allowing tradition to be carried forward through a contemporary hand.

NIEI is a Kiyomizu ware brand founded in 2021 by Niei, a master overglaze painter of Kiyomizu ware and a certified traditional craftsperson.

Currently, NIEI brings together four overglaze painters: its founder Niei, along with Sosha, Kohaku, and Kyoka. Each artist works with a free and individual sensibility, making the discovery of richly distinctive pieces one of the brand’s great pleasures.
