Ofuna Hoko of the Gion Matsuri, Reimagined as a Kyo Koma

This colorful Kyo Koma (Kyoto spinning top) is inspired by Ofuna Hoko, one of the magnificent floats of Kyoto’s Gion Matsuri Festival.

Ofuna Hoko is shaped like a traditional boat and is associated with the legend of Empress Jingu. While Funa Hoko represents her departure for battle, Ofuna Hoko represents her victorious return.

This Kyo Koma features the striking Daikinpei (Large Golden Ornament) that adorns the bow of Ofuna Hoko, recreating the float’s distinctive form with the colorful threads characteristic of Kyo Koma. On the actual Ofuna Hoko, the Daikinpei and Ryuzu (Dragon Head) are displayed at the bow in alternating years.

Kyo Koma are traditional Kyoto spinning tops made by winding bundles of dyed cotton thread around a core. The layers of colorful thread create beautiful striped patterns, giving each piece its distinctive appearance.

The spinning top on the upper part can be removed and actually spun. Enjoy it as a decorative piece or as a traditional Kyo Koma.

A unique piece that brings together the festive spirit of Kyoto’s Gion Matsuri and the craftsmanship of Kyo Koma.
