Kyoto Festival Gion Festival Floats
This is a "Kyoto top" Hoko made by wrapping and layering cotton string (bundles of dyed cotton thread).
The decoration at the top of the Houka Hoko consists of three circles which are said to be in the shape of a sandbar, representing the sun, moon and stars - three rays illuminating the world below - and the sticks pointing diagonally downward on both sides represent light.
