Hyakunin Isshu, a collection of one hundred classical waka poems, is said to have been selected by Fujiwara no Teika at his mountain villa in Ogurayama, Kyoto.
The poems follow the 5–7–5–7–7 syllabic structure, capturing scenes and emotions that continue to resonate deeply with readers even today.
All of the karuta in this set are handcrafted by skilled artisans.
Each card is carefully wrapped using washi paper produced in Echizen Ōtaki, a region renowned for traditional papermaking. With continued use, the cards develop an increasingly refined character.
The backing paper is finished with gold and silver accents, lending the set a quiet elegance.
The paulownia wood box is crafted from high-quality Aizu Mishima kiri (paulownia), prized for its durability and suitability for long-term storage. Designed to protect the cards for decades, it is a piece meant to be passed down through generations.
This set can be enjoyed as an introduction to classical Japanese poetry, played with family during the New Year holidays, or displayed when not in use. When displayed in a well-ventilated area, it also helps protect the cards from insect damage.
