A hand-printed woodblock book jacket, made one by one
Woodblock print “Shima (Stripes)” / Yuko Harada
“Shima” means stripes in Japanese. Striped patterns have long been used in a wide variety of designs in Japan. Here, the pattern is rendered through woodblock printing, giving the simple vertical stripes a soft, hand-drawn quality.
The fresh green color, known as moegi in Japanese, adds a bright yet gentle touch to the design.
Each piece is made entirely by hand through the traditional woodblock printing process: drawing the design, carving the woodblock, and printing it by hand with a baren. The subtle variations in color and texture give each cover the distinctive warmth of a handmade print.
The book jacket is made from smooth-surfaced washi paper selected for its vivid color reproduction and durability, making it well suited to woodblock printing.
As the pigments are carefully worked into the washi during printing, the color is resistant to rubbing. The paper also has a comfortable thickness and feels pleasant in the hand.
