The Kyo Koma is a tatami top exclusively for indoor play.

Wrap the cloth around the core rod to make a large torso. Tops are auspicious things represented by New Year's games, such as "spinning harmoniously" and "piercing the truth." Beautiful Kyoto tops are made by hand.

Jakkyu

This is the only workshop that continues the tradition of "Kyo Koma", a traditional Kyoto craft. "Kyo Koma" originated as "ozashiki" tops made by upper-class women in the "Momoyama" period, by wrapping scraps of "kimono" fabric around a bamboo core. Today, they are made by wrapping flat cotton cord around a bamboo core. Highly artistic tops, such as precise reproductions of the floats used in the "Gion" Festival, are also popular as ornamental pieces.
