About us

The Kyoto Museum of Crafts and Design is located in the Okazaki area, between the urban area of Kyoto and the foothills of the Higashiyama Mountains. It is part of Kyoto's iconic cultural zone, which is home to a variety of cultural facilities, including the Kyoto City Kyocera Museum of Art, ROHM Theatre Kyoto, the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto, Kyoto Prefectural Library, Heian Shrine, and Kyoto City Zoo.
Kyoto has been the capital for over 1,000 years since the Heian period, and has nurtured a unique culture including the tea ceremony, flower arrangement, Noh, and Kyogen. As a diverse range of people gathered and the city developed as an economic center, it was traditional industries that supported culture and people's lives.
This is one of Japan's leading exhibition halls, systematically showcasing 74 traditional industries that convey the history and techniques of Kyoto. Each corner not only displays the actual works, but also panels and video materials that clearly explain the production process, allowing you to get up close and personal with the beauty and techniques of a wide variety of traditional crafts.
After a renovation in 2020, the Kyoto Museum of Crafts and Design further enhanced its programs to introduce the activities of modern creators, creating a space for free interaction where creators and users can look at the current state of traditional industries and imagine the future.
