Kyo-uchiwa (Kyoto round fans)

It is said that during the Nanbokucho period, fans whose backbone and handle were made from a single piece of bamboo were brought to western Japan by Japanese pirates. Kyoto fans, which are characterized by the design of separate ribs and handles, first appeared in the Imperial Palace fans, which were decorated with paintings by artists of the Tosa school and the Kano school, and gradually became popular.
