Although many traditional industries were brought over from the continent, folding fans were invented in Japan around the 9th century.
Wooden cypress fans, followed by paper fans, were created and developed as luxurious crafts that took deep roots in the daily life of the dynastic society. There are dancing fans, Noh fans, tea fans, decorative fans, and practical fans for keeping cool.
