Yamabushi Yama of the Gion Matsuri, Reimagined as a Kyo Koma

This colorful Kyo Koma (Kyoto spinning top) is inspired by Yamabushi Yama, one of the distinctive floats of Kyoto’s Gion Matsuri Festival.

Yamabushi Yama takes its name from its sacred figure dressed as a yamabushi, a mountain ascetic. The figure represents Jozo Kisho, a renowned ascetic from the Heian period. According to legend, he used his spiritual powers to restore the leaning Yasaka Pagoda (Hokanji Temple) to its upright position.

The distinctive figure of Yamabushi Yama, holding prayer beads in his left hand and an axe in his right, with a conch-shell horn at his waist, is recreated here using the colorful threads characteristic of Kyo Koma.

Kyo Koma are traditional Kyoto spinning tops made by winding bundles of dyed cotton thread around a core. The layers of colorful thread create beautiful striped patterns, giving each piece its distinctive appearance.

Part of the piece can be removed and actually spun. Enjoy it as a decorative piece or experience the traditional play of Kyo Koma.
