A traditional Japanese smoking set consisting of a kiseru pipe, pipe case, and tobacco pouch.

The bamboo stem of the kiseru is finished with Shunkei lacquer, while the metal fittings are crafted from brass in the classic Genke-gonomi style, a design aesthetic favored in traditional Japanese craftsmanship.

The "Murata" inscription is a historical mark originating from a commission by the former Murata Watch Shop. This piece is a rare stock item preserved from that production.

Both the tobacco pouch and pipe case feature a fan motif. In Japan, folding fans are regarded as auspicious symbols because their shape widens toward the end, representing prosperity, growth, and a bright future.

More than simply a smoking tool, the kiseru is a vessel for appreciating the aroma of tobacco smoke itself.

Traditionally, tobacco was lit using charcoal placed in a tabako-bon (Japanese tobacco tray). By transferring the ember gently to the tobacco, unwanted odors from an open flame were avoided, allowing the pure fragrance of the tobacco and its delicate smoke to be enjoyed.

The kiseru embodies a uniquely Japanese culture of “savoring the smoke,” inviting a slower and more contemplative experience.

Please note that shredded tobacco "Koiki" is not included or sold by our museum shop. It may be purchased separately from specialty tobacco retailers.

Regular cleaning will extend the life of your kiseru. We recommend replacing the bamboo stem after about six months for frequent users, or about one year for occasional users. For maintenance such as replacing the bamboo stem, please consult the manufacturer, Tanikawa Seijiro Shoten.

For those who enjoy tobacco with a kiseru:
If you do not have a tabakobon, it is more suitable to light the tobacco with an electronic lighter than an oil lighter. You can enjoy the pure aroma of the smoke without the smell of oil.
