Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849)

Hokusai’s works had a profound influence on Western painters and he is still regarded today as one of the most famous Japanese artists in the world.

Against a dark sky that suggests an approaching storm, a massive wave surges upward, with Mount Fuji quietly appearing in the distance.
A boat—likely carrying urgent cargo from the Bōsō Peninsula to Edo—is being swallowed by the wave.
The contrast between the powerful, dynamic motion of the wave and the distant, stable triangular form of Mount Fuji creates a strong sense of depth and perspective.

Katsushika Hokusai, who was active during the Edo period, worked across a wide range of genres, including actor portraits and illustrations for books.
He also studied techniques from both Chinese and Western painting, incorporating shading and perspective into his landscapes. These innovations culminated in his masterpiece series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, which includes the renowned "South Wind, Clear Sky"—also known as the "Red Fuji."
