The Essence of Hokusai's Art: Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji.
Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849)
Hokusai’s works had a profound influence on Western painters and he is still regarded today as one of the most famous Japanese artists in the world.
"Gaifuu" refers to a southerly wind. From summer into autumn, there are clear mornings when the rising sun bathes Mount Fuji in a brilliant red glow.
In this print, Fuji is boldly rendered to fill the entire composition. One can imagine Hokusai himself gazing at this scene with awe and wonder.
Katsushika Hokusai, who was active during the Edo period, worked across a wide range of genres, including actor portraits and illustrations for books.
He also studied techniques from both Chinese and Western painting, incorporating shading and perspective into his landscapes. These innovations culminated in his masterpiece series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, which includes the renowned "South Wind, Clear Sky"—also known as the "Red Fuji."
