A hand-printed woodblock book jacket, made one by one

“Minazuki” is a traditional Kyoto wagashi (Japanese confectionery) enjoyed in June. In Kyoto, it is traditionally eaten on the day of Nagoshi no Harae, a seasonal purification ritual, with wishes for good health through the coming months.

This design features the distinctive triangular shape of Minazuki, with its contrasting layers of red beans and mochi. Arranged side by side, the sweets form a playful geometric pattern.

Each piece is made entirely by hand through the traditional woodblock printing process: drawing the design, carving the woodblock, and printing it by hand with a baren. This design is printed in two colors, adding depth and character to the repeating pattern.

The subtle variations in color and texture give each book jacket the distinctive warmth of a handmade print.

The book jacket is made from smooth-surfaced washi paper selected for its vivid color reproduction and durability, making it well suited to woodblock printing.

As the pigments are carefully worked into the washi during printing, the color is resistant to rubbing. The paper also has a comfortable thickness and feels pleasant in the hand.
