- CREATORS INFO
A “Dutch” tea bowl created as a Kenzan utsushi, painted by Niei.
Vivid colors inspired by Dutch paintings spread across the surface, lending the bowl an exotic and lively presence.
The bold palette and playful composition reflect Ogata Kenzan’s fascination with foreign motifs, reimagined here with a contemporary sensibility.
Through this utsushi, a moment of cross-cultural encounter—filtered through Kenzan’s vision—is brought into dialogue with the present, allowing distant influences to resonate quietly in the hand.
About Utsushi
Utsushi is a long-standing practice in Japanese ceramics in which artists respectfully learn from and reinterpret the works of great masters.
Rather than simple reproduction, it is a creative dialogue between past and present, allowing tradition to be carried forward through a contemporary hand.

NIEI is a Kiyomizu ware brand founded in 2021 by Niei, a master overglaze painter of Kiyomizu ware and a certified traditional craftsperson.
Currently, NIEI brings together four overglaze painters: its founder Niei, along with Sosha, Kohaku, and Kyoka. Each artist works with a free and individual sensibility, making the discovery of richly distinctive pieces one of the brand’s great pleasures.
