This Fushimi doll depicts Hotei cheerfully walking with a large sack slung over his shoulder.
With his round belly, prominent earlobes, and beaming smile, Hotei has a warm and joyful presence. The deep navy sack over his shoulder contrasts beautifully with his vivid orange robes, giving the figure a colorful and distinctive appearance.
Hotei is said to have been based on an eccentric Buddhist monk who lived in China around the 10th century and wandered from place to place carrying a large cloth sack. In Japan, he came to be revered as one of the Seven Gods of Good Fortune (Shichifukujin) and is associated with happiness, prosperity, and good fortune.
Carrying the large sack for which he is so well known, Hotei is portrayed here with the warmth and humor characteristic of Fushimi dolls. His auspicious appearance, rustic clay texture, and vivid hand-painted colors give this piece its distinctive charm.

Tanka
Founded in the around 1750.
Located along the Fushimi Kaido road, this Fushimi doll kiln is marked by its historic appearance and red "noren" curtains.
When Fushimi dolls were at their peak (late Edo period), there were about 60 kilns lined up along the Fushimi Kaido road, but only one kiln still exists today. It was the only one.
At "Tanka," molds are made from spring to summer, and after drying in the sun in summer, the pieces are bisque fired in a kiln.
The painting is done from autumn to winter and spring when the glue is in good condition.
This seasonal process has been repeated for over 250 years.
They continues to create dolls every day, passing on the stories behind them.
