Woodblock print by Sekka Kamisaka, Eight Folded Bridge , Framed

Each print is taken from the art book "Momoyogusa," published by Unsodo in 1909-10 , and is hand-printed by a modern printer using woodblocks from that time.

Sekka Kamisaka (1866-1942 )
Born in Kyoto, his real name was Yoshitaka. He studied under Suzuki Mizuhiko of the Shijo school, and later became a disciple of Kishi Kageyoshi, where he learned design. A painter of the Koetsu-Korin school, he produced original drawings for crafts such as lacquerware and dyed textiles, as well as interior decoration, and published many design books.
Sekka traveled around Europe and incorporated the Art Nouveau style into his work, earning him acclaim in the West as a pioneer of his own unique style. He also shed light on modern crafts in Japan and contributed greatly to their subsequent development. His work is still highly regarded today, especially in the West, and was featured on the cover and first 12 pages of issue 38 of Le Monde Hermes. Sekka's work still breathes the same innovative world of design beauty that captivates even today's top brands.
