The sun blazes overhead, and the chorus of cicadas echoes through the summer air.

This year, Risshū—the traditional first day of autumn on the Japanese calendar—falls on August 7. Although the intense heat lingers, the seasons slowly begin to shift.

In Kyoto, after the "Gozan Okuribi" bonfires that mark the end of the "Obon" festival, the cries of evening cicadas (higurashi) and late-summer cicadas (tsukutsukubōshi) begin to replace the midsummer chorus. In the cooler evening breeze and the gradually shortening days, you can sense autumn quietly drawing near.
