Utagawa Hiroshige was an ukiyo-e artist active in the late Edo period. He gained popularity with "Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido," which depicted the post towns along the Tokaido road from Edo to Kyoto, and went on to paint many landscapes from all over Japan. He did not just depict famous places in each region, but also left behind many works that poetically depict the rain, wind, and other elements of nature, as well as the humorous demeanor of ordinary people. The beauty of his indigo blue in particular has earned him worldwide acclaim, and he is known as "Hiroshige Blue."
