* Asai Chu / 1856 - 1907
Chu Asai is known as a Western-style painter in the Meiji period. Born in the Edo residence of the Sakura Domain. He learned Western painting from Italian artist Fontanesi, opened a research institute in Kanda, and founded the Meiji Bijutsukai with Hosui Yamamoto and others. After that, he went to study in France and became a driving force in Western art in Japan. After returning to Japan, he became a principal professor at the Kyoto High School of Arts and Crafts. In addition, he opened the Kansai Art Institute and worked hard to revitalize and develop Kyoto's Western-style painting world, while also vigorously working on his own design and craft production, which had an impact on the craft world in Kyoto at the time.
