Folding fan, Japanese fan, Hand fan, Gourd / Large no.0913
by 大西京扇堂
$36.00A Kyoto folding fan with a cool gourd drawn in gold and a vine entwined with it.
The design is simple yet memorable at first glance, and is hand-painted one by one.
The gourd is considered auspicious because of its expansive shape, and has been widely used as an amulet to ward off disasters and to ward off evil spirits.
It is also said to be a symbol of prosperous business, as the vine entwining things captures people's hearts.
The ribs are made of bamboo harvested from the Adogawa River in Shiga Prefecture, and the character for “Kyo” is carved open.
